How to plan the perfect birthday party for your child

Updated: Dec 12, 2022

Organising your child’s birthday party can be so much fun. However, deciding the theme, decorations and activities can be a little overwhelming at times, especially when there are so many options available in the market. Furthermore, there are also admin tasks such as getting the caterer and collating the RSVPs. In times like this, referring to the following list that we have for you will help you plan the perfect birthday party for your child.

Here are some important things to consider when planning a birthday party for your child.

1. Budget

Before you begin your planning, you should set a budget for the birthday party. Whether you decide to plan the party all by yourself or hire a party planner, setting a budget will help you determine how much you can spend right from the start.

2. Theme

It is important for you to hear the view of your child if he is old enough to provide his opinions. Letting your kid choose the theme he wants will make the party extra-special for him. If you do not know where to begin searching for themes, you can check out Pinterest for inspiration. Alternatively, if you work with a #partyplanner, approach your party planner for advice on the themes. Most party planners in Singapore are able to share with you past birthday events they have been involved in and what they are capable of producing.

Here is a fun short video on the subject of kids birthday parties and why you should really ask your kids what they want for their birthday parties.

3. Date

Weekends are always preferred over weekdays for kids’ birthday parties. You can communicate with the parents of invited kids for the RSVP, since most kids are likely not going to respond to invitations.

4. Venue

Most birthday parties for children are held at home or at the condo’s function room. These venue options are great as they are either free or low-cost. If you want a unique venue, you can consider having the party at an arcade or bowling alley if your budget allows.

5. Guest List

When coming up with the guest list, you should ask your child which of their friends they would like to invite to the party. Besides his classmates, the invitation can also be extended to their friends from their tuition classes or other extra-curricular activities.

6. Invitations

It is good to send out the invitation at least one month in advance. This would help ensure that the invited guests would be able to make it to the birthday party.

Here is a blog that touches on this subject titled 'You Need To Set The Mood When You Set The Date'.

How about using fun and catchy video invites and do your small part to be eco friendly to save the trees? Video invites are more fun and you can send a clickable link to the video invitations through emails or WhatsApp messages too. Here is a sample video invitation.

7. Activities

Children's activities are particularly important to keep the young guests entertained throughout the party. Consider organising a scavenger hunt or other group activities that they can do at the party.

8. Food

Besides the usual catered food, you can have more interactive meals for the kids, such as creating your own pizzas or decorating cupcakes. You can also serve various types of juice and homemade drinks. To make the experience more interesting for them, you can use colourful water straws to jazz up the beverages.

9. Goodie Bags

Make sure the kids don't leave the party without a goodie bag! They do not have to be complicated, just a bag with candies will keep the guests very happy.
